Sophie Cruz, 5-Year-Old Child of Immigrants, Hands Pope Francis a Letter

Sophie Cruz, a young child of immigrants is already doing admirable things. On Wednesday’s papal parade in Washington D.C., the little girl bypassed police blockades for a chance to speak to Pope Francis during his historic U.S. tour.
Although security tried to stop her, Francis saw the girl from afar and ushered her over. A security guard lifted the 5-year-old toward the Pope, who embraced and hugged her sweetly. She reportedly left him with a gift — a letter asking him to do something about immigration reform in the United States.

“I believe I have the right to live with my parents,” the letter read, according to AP. “I have the write to be happy. My dad works very hard in a factory galvanizing pieces of metal. All immigrants just like my dad feed this country. They deserve to live with dignity. They deserve to live with respect.”

Cruz, a native of California, also gave him a yellow t-shirt that read “Pope: rescue DAPA, so the legalization would be with your blessing,” People reports. DAPA stands for Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, President Barack Obama’s executive action that would extend deportation protections to the parents of American citizens.
