Lin Kramer is furious at Party City’s selection of little girls costumes, and rightfully so. The angry mom took to the retailer’s Facebook page to criticize the sexist costumes and she made several excellent points. One in particular is the “sexy cop” Halloween costume intended for young girls.
Kramer became upset when she browsed the website’s toddler Halloween costumes and found that there were 16 occupation-themed costumes for boys, but a mere three for girls. And when the girls did have a choice for an occupation costume, the differences between the boy and girl costumes were astounding.
She wrote on Party City’s Facebook page saying:
While Halloween costumes are undoubtedly about “make-believe,” it is unfathomable that toddler girls and boys who might be interested in dressing up as police officers are seeking to imagine themselves in the incongruent way your business apparently imagines them. Toddler girls are not imagining and hoping that they will grow up to become a ‘sexy cop,’ which is clearly what your girl costume suggests; rather, young girls, just as young boys, see and admire their family members and neighbors offering service to their communities and delight in the idea of doing the same. I am absolutely appalled that your business reinterprets girls’ innocent and well-intentioned dreams into this costume.
Party City responded, saying that they would consider this in the future and that they appreciated her feedback. But Kramer said that the company later deleted her comment, along with the many supportive comments below it that backed up her frustration. She also claims they eventually blocked her from their Facebook page.
Here’s to hoping her statement makes a difference, but for now the retailer has since told the Huffington Post “We expect parents to be as involved in their children’s costume selections as they are in selecting their everyday wardrobe, and we encourage parents to shop with their children. We supply the types of products that our customers, and specifically parents, demand.” They also added, that the “sexy cop” costume was one of their best sellers.
