But did you know that we have J.Lo to thank for the invention of Google Image Search? Yes, you read that correctly.
In a January blog post for Project Syndicate, Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt wrote about the evolution of the search engine, and dropped one huge bombshell about the development of the site.
“[Our co-founders] started with images,” he wrote. “After all, people wanted more than just text. This first became apparent after the 2000 Grammy Awards, where Jennifer Lopez wore a green dress that, well, caught the world’s attention. At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: JLo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”
So, there you have it: you have Jenny from the Block (and Versace!) to thank every time you Google Image Search for pictures. Thanks, J.Lo!
