If you’re looking for some body positivity on Instagram, don’t expect to search #curvy and find photos. According to Mashable, you can no longer search for the term on the app. Instead, you get suggestions like #CurvyGirl, #CurvyFashion, and #CurvyWomen, but you can’t just look for #curvy itself.
Why the block? A spokesperson for the picture sharing application told Buzzfeed that the hashtag #curvy is not searchable as it was being used to share images and videos that violated Instagram’s community guidelines around nudity.
The ban of the term joins Instagram’s list of banned search words, which include #sex, #nude and #thinspo.
Activists are firing back and say that the censorship is hurting women’s body image. Millions of photos were posted with that tag, according to a Websta.me search, and most of those were inspiring statements of self-esteem. Artist Sam Roddick, whose vagina-shaped artwork was blocked, told The Huffington Post UK that “[Instagram] are showing that as a company their philosophy is emotionally and intellectually unhealthy and psychologically damaging towards women.”
Body shaming and explicit terms that occasionally portray nudity, like #fatso and #penis, are still searchable on the application. Seriously, Instagram? Get it together.
